Different Regional types of ramen

Today we will talk about the different Regional types of ramen. In a previous article, we’ve talked about the main flavors of ramen; Shoyu, Shio, Miso and Curry Ramen. But did you know that these flavors of ramen can be made with different styles and techniques? 

Ramen isn’t just one flavor and one type of noodles, it’s specific to a type of ramen from a certain Region. Almost every part of Japan has it’s own style of ramen. There are so many regions we can mention but we will talk about the ones that have become famous worldwide.

First up is Tokyo style ramen. This ramen typically uses thin, curly noodles with a light soy-flavored chicken broth. The Standard toppings for this ramen are scallions, menu, pork chashu, kamaboko, egg, spinach and seaweed.

Second up is Sapporo style ramen from Hokkaido. This ramen is famous for it’s rich thick soup. Miso ramen originates from here and is probably one of the most famous ones on our list. The regular toppings are corn, butter, bean sprouts, garlic and pork chashu. Many places also offer “Seafood” variations.

Third up is Kitakata style from Honshu. This ramen uses a thick/flat curly noodles with pork and niboshi broth. Ramen is so popular in this region that it is known to have the most ramen establishments in one area.

Forth up is Hataka Ramen from Fukuoka in Kyushu. This ramen uses a thin resilient noodles. It’s served with a rich and milky tonkotsu broth. Toppings are usually  garlic, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and spicy pickled mustard greens. This style of ramen is also very popular as several chain restaurants are found all over Japan.

Next up is Wakayama style ramen from the Kansai region. The main flavor for this ramen is shoyu mixed with pork bones. While there isn’t too much to say about this ramen, it’s popular enough that we have to mention this style. 

And last but not least, Yokohama style ramen! You might be already familiar with this style since it is the style for Yaguchiya Ramen! It’s commonly referred to as Iekei style ramen. This style of ramen uses a thicker style of noodles. It’s served in a chicken and pork broth to create a lighter balance. Customers typically choose how they want their noodles cooked as well as flavor level and oil.
